#1 - 3D Models

One of the coolest things about Google Earth is the 3D aspect of it. Almost every other mapping application (Google Maps, MapQuest, etc) is flat. Being able to tilt the screen and fly into an area sets Google Earth apart.

The first release of Google Earth had some 3D buildings in it and allowed users to create more. The problem was that the buildings were ugly - each surface had to be a single solid color. In fact, most of Google's buildings were solid white.

The release of Version 4 unveiled a great new feature - textured 3D objects! This allows you to make the outside of a building look just like the outside of the real building - windows, bricks, doors, whatever. If you want to try making your own, you can download Google's free SketchUp software.

Here are some of the best looking 3D models released so far:

Fenway Park (download)
Home of the Boston Red Sox, Fenway Park is one of the oldest and most-loved baseball stadiums in the United States.

San Francisco City Hall (download)
This one was created by Google and is very nice looking.

The Rose Bowl (download)
While this file doesn't use textures, it's still quite impressive.
